Why Signal Matters
In Getting Your First Software Job Without Professional Experience, we covered the main ways new engineers create experience: internships, projects, contract work, open source, and putting yourself in the market.
Now we’re going one layer deeper: how do you make that experience legible to someone hiring software engineers?
A recruiter is not trying to read your life story. A hiring manager is not trying to reward effort. They are scanning for evidence that you can:
- learn technical concepts,
- build and debug working things,
- communicate clearly,
- finish work despite ambiguity,
- and improve something real.
That evidence is what we’ll call signal.
We are not writing the final resume yet — that comes later in the Resume Positioning section. This lesson is about finding the raw material.
