To try EM: run a time-boxed rotation—own 1:1s, hiring loop, and delivery for a sprint or two. To try Staff+: lead a cross-team design/migration with measurable SLIs and a crisp RFC process. Switching is increasingly normalized; seek mentors on both sides.
Write a learning goal either way (e.g., “reduce incident MTTR by 30%” or “raise onboarding pass rate to 80%”) to keep the experiment real.
